Coal Indonesia

 

All of Challengers coal acquisition and exploration activities are focused on the East Kalimantan area of Indonesia.

Operations

Challenger has an ongoing property acquisition program of project identification, initial evaluation, title investigation and, where properties meet either tactical or strategic objectives, the negotiation of options to purchase. Once an option has been secured, preliminary geological and in-depth title due diligence is undertaken. Geological evaluations include review of existing data, field mapping and sampling. If the project satisfies both legal and initial geological due diligence, a conditional purchase agreement is executed following which scout drilling is conducted. A successful scout drill program would lead to more extensive drill programs designed to confirm commercial quantities of coal. Challenger’s current property portfolio is summarized in the table below and more fully described in the following descriptions:

Tabang Project, East Kalimantan

The 100% owned 2,900ha Tabang Project is located in the Tabang district, Regency of Kutai Kartanegara, East Kalimantan, Indonesia.

The project area is accessible by vehicle with well established logging roads and is situated in close proximity to the Belayan River, a major tributary of the Mahakam which in turn is the coal transport route to Muara Jawa, the anchorage point for mother vessels and export to market. This river has the capacity to handle 230 foot (3,500 tonnes) barges from projected port facilities.

Coal operations in the area currently use the Belayan River as a transportation highway for commercial coal production.

The Tabang Project area covers both the Batuayau and Ujoh Bilang geological formations. The typical coal quality of the Ujoh Bilang and Batuayau Formations from producing coal mines in the region is CV 5,500 � 6,000 Kcal/Kg (ADB) with coal seam thicknesses varying from 0.5 � 6 meters.

Indonesia

Phase I Exploration Program

Challenger has conducted a Phase I exploration program and is currently conducting a Phase II exploration program on its 100% Tabang, East Kalimantan coal project.

The Phase I exploration program consisted of geologic mapping, outcrop sampling, trenching as well as the excavation of  test pits.  Work completed to date indicates that an ongoing focused will be on the north and central portion  of the property.

Through its exploration to date, Challenger has discovered 58 coal outcrops (see map below).  Challenger’s preliminary interpretation of the discovered outcropping coal is that at least eight separate  seams are evident. The width of seams varies between .25 to .8 meters. The seams are shallow dipping (10 to 20 degrees).  Each coal seam was sampled and all samples were submitted for analysis by Pt Geoservices Coal Laboratory, East Kalimantan.  All test pit samples were processed by SGS Coal Laboratories, Samarinda, East Kalimantan.  Industry standard Quality Control and Quality Assurance protocols were employed in the sample acquisition, preparation and analysis procedures.

Based on the sample analysis performed, coal quality in the discovered seams is in the 5,000 - 6,000 Kcal/kg (AR) range. This quality of coal is highly marketable.  Details of the representative coal seam samples are set out below:

Coal Outcrop Map

The Phase II scout drill program which is on going, has completed 14 holes over 541 meters at depths between 25-50 meters. The Phase II program will include another 1000 - 2000 meters of drilling designed to test the quality, continuity, width and number of coal seams at depth.

Arni Bersaudara Coal Project (AB)

Pt Arni Bersaudara (“Arni”) is the holder of two contiguous IUP Exploration permits covering 3,039 and 2,874 hectares in the District of Muara Kaman. The IUP’s are approximately 40km north of the Mahakam River.

The IUP covers the Pamaluan and Balikpapan formations which typically host coal in the ranges of GVC (Adb) 6,300 – 7,000 Kcal/Kg and GVC (Adb) 5,600 – 6,000 Kcal/Kg, respectively.  Typical coal seam thickness of the Pamaluan is 0.5 to 3 metres and between 1 – 20 metres in the Balikpapan.

The Arni MOU provides that, if Challenger elects to enter into a CSPA, it can acquire 100% of Arni for payments totalling $2,414,181 CAD.  Terms of the payment include $84,215 CAD upon signing, $308,790 CAD within 6 months of signing the CSPA and the balance of $2,021,176 CAD after all the essential permits to bring the project into production are in place, or a maximum of 24 months from initial CSPA signing.

Apriadi Bersaudara Coal Projects (AP)

Pt Apriadi Bersaudara (“Apriadi”) is holder of a KP PU (Mining Authorization for General Survey) covering an area of 930 hectares, which is currently being converted to IUP Exploration in the District of Samboja (AP).  The AP project is 10km from the coast and close to an independent haul road and port loading facilities which are under construction. 

This project covers the Kampung Baru formation which is known to be coal bearing in the region with typical coal quality of GVC (Adb) 5,000 – 5,500 Kcal/Kg.

The Apriadi MOU provides that, if Challenger elects to enter into a CSPA, it can acquire 100% of Apriadi for payments totalling $2,077,318 CAD. Terms of the payment include $56,143 CAD upon signing of the CSPA , $112,287 CAD upon receiving IUP exploration permits for both projects,   $224,575 CAD within 12 months of CSPA and the balance of $1,684,313 CAD due on the 24 month anniversary of the CSPA signing.

PT BMU Properties

Pt Bara Mandiri Utama is a private Indonesian company which owns 4 contiguous IUP applications (CV Kiat Perdana Samboja, 98.7Ha; CV Bara Gemilang Samboja, 91 Ha; CV Gani Tilanta Samboja, 91.74; CV Buana Lipu, 98.35 Ha) in the Samboga District, Regency of Kutai Kutai Kartanegara, East Kalimantan. The project is located directly on the coast just south of the Mahakam estuary North of Balikpapan and covers a total area of 380Ha.

The area covers the Kampung Baru geological formation which is known, in East Kalimantan, to host thick seams of medium CV (5100-5300 kg/kcal) thermal coal. Coal outcrops have been observed on the project area however quality and extent have not been confirmed. The area is immediately adjacent (1km) to an independent coal loading terminal (under construction) with a multi-use haul road passing directly through the project. The coal facility is being constructed to service operations immediately inland with similar coal quality targeted for the project.

The target for the area is low strip ratio, marketable thermal coal strategically located with adjacent port and haul facilities.
